Area Information
For most of the 20th century, our region was a lovely section of the state that was connected via dirt roads and trails. In 1963, however, Greers Ferry Lake was created. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of a dam across the Little Red River, and formed a lake with 343 miles of shoreline.
Area amenities include a pair of public schools offer education to local students of all levels from Kindergarten up through the end of high school.
Higher education is available from many institutions within 60 miles of town, including Harding University, the University of Central Arkansas, Arkansas State University - Beebe Branch, Arkansas Tech University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Baptist Health Medical Center of Heber Springs and Ozark Health, Inc. both sit about 13 miles outside of town and offer extensive medical care.
Greers Ferry Lake ranks as one of the most pollution-free lakes in the nation, and provides a fantastic playground for fishing enthusiasts, boaters, scuba divers, water-skiers and anyone seeking fun in the sun. The lake is dotted with more than 1,200 public and private camp sites as well as a selection of motel and resort facilities, high-quality marinas and more.
The lake isn't the only place to catch some incredible fish, though. The Little Red River's tributaries produce some of the largest walleye in the world, supporting a major event each year known as "the Walleye Run."
Sugar Loaf Mountain is a great place for adventuresome hikers and climbers to
check out. This mountain is found on an island in the middle of the lake.
Covered with native trees and massive stone formations, it's a scenic hike up to
some astonishing panoramic views.
If you want to explore more of the outdoors, the Ozark National Forest isn't far
away. In the forest, you can wander through Blanchard Springs Caverns, climb to
the top of Mount Magazine, make your way down the Arkansas River.
